Types of medical hypnosis: Hypno-sedation

A form of medical hypnosis that is gaining popularity these days is known as hypno-sedation. Hypno-sedation is a form of hypnotherapy that decreases or eliminates the need for general anesthetic during surgery. With hypno-sedation the patient is sedated using the power of hypnotherapy rather than traditional anesthetics. The hypnotherapist assists the patient in controlling their subconscious mind through hypnotic suggestions. The subconscious controls the reflexes and so the patient will not feel pain. They may still have feeling though. Some patients have described it as a tingling or tickling feeling. You may have heard of hypno-sedation referred to as hypno-surgery or hypno-anesthesia.

The most important benefit of hypno-sedation is that there are far less side effects than with general anesthetics.  The patient may even be able to leave the hospital sooner. Also, research has shown that the leading cause of death during surgery is complications related to chemical anesthesia.

Hypnosis is also known to increase comfort and healing.  Hypnosis gets rid of bodily pain, and it’s free of the side effects that are there with the use of anesthesia or other drugs. The use of narcotic pain relievers can lead to chronic pain and possibly even addiction.  The reason that hypnosis is powerful enough to promote both physical and emotional well being stems from its ability to profoundly alter brain function.

So if you are considering surgery, don’t rule out hypno-sedation. Medical hypnosis may be just what you need to get you through the anxiety and pain of it all.

Hi Hypnotherapy Guru, My husband actually used hypnotherapy ´´only´´ during a back operation in the 1980s and told his surgeon just to give him the order to take off and when they wanted him to come out of it just to tell him he was approved for landing. The surgeon was shocked at how little he bled, how little residual pain he had during recuperation, and how fast he healed. My husband had previous experience with hypnosis that I can´t go into but which sold him on it´s usefulness. He studied it during martial arts training as well. The two go hand in hand. He went on to become a certified Hypnotherapist that works with patients on pain management issues. Hypnotism isn´t just for weight loss, smoking cessation, bad habits, etc. It´s good for so much more than most people realize. Hypnotism will be much bigger in the future than it is now. Maybe that´s for the best considering that pharmaceuticals and bad habits cost us money we will soon need for basic needs alone. As a sufferer of post traumatic stress disorder I can say that self hypnosis helps a great deal and can be done by almost anyone. It has been a source of relief for I and my husband. Thanks for writing the article on this subject. Patty
